Ginger wondered if she’d stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia. Only she was wearing a towel robe, which was utterly unsuitable for the snow-covered world that lay beyond the coats.

‘Where are we? What is this?’ The walls of the small room – well, it was more of a cave – were made of rough white bricks. The ceiling was wildly uneven; it looked like a cross between white honeycomb, snow, rocks, and in places it hung down like stalactites. Below her feet was rough white sand.

‘This, Ginger Salt, is a salt cave. I could hardly bring you here and not have you experience your namesake.’

‘And what do we do in a salt cave? Lick the walls?’ Ginger wasn’t being serious, but she wouldn’t be surprised if something so ridiculous was expected of her.

‘Sit, relax, focus on your breathing and enjoy having your respiratory system cleansed.’

Ginger didn’t believe a word and made sure her face illustrated that. Joyce let out a long sigh and sat in a wooden lounger.

‘We’re clearly not going have a moment of tranquillity, let alone twenty-five minutes, so come on then: how were the treatments? I intentionally chose ones that wouldn’t, or shouldn’t, disturb you too much.’

Ginger frowned. She didn’t like to think of herself as unadventurous, this just wasn’t her kind of thing. Or did that make her unadventurous? She was no longer sure and felt a little concerned; maybe she should dive in and have a herbal-wrapped mud bath while being buried under a cairn to prove her point.

‘Fine. I mean, it was a bit weird, but I suppose I found the facial relaxing. It smelt nice. I’m not sure it’s necessary, though.’

‘It’s not about what’s necessary, although personally, I think they are if you want to look after yourself. It’s about enjoyment, relaxation, rejuvenation…’

‘Expenditure, laziness…’

Joyce looked annoyed by Ginger’s additions to the list. Ginger was only complaining to wind her friend up, plus she hadn’t been prepared to like it. Joyce was right, and that was irritating to say the least.

‘Alright, yes, it was okay and I might even consider having another. And you can take that smirk off your face; you were right about the facial, but not the bloody pedicure. It was ticklish, I hate people touching my feet. They’re fine as they are.’

‘I’ve seen your feet, and I sometimes wonder if you need a blacksmith to come and shoe them.’

Ginger couldn’t help but laugh at that; Joyce wasn’t far off. The pedicure hadn’t been a huge success, she’d giggled through most of it and kept pulling her feet away, but they did feel like they’d had a good scrub.

They settled down on the wooden loungers, their legs out in front of them, closed their eyes and took a deep breath. That was it, as long as Ginger could manage.

‘Come on, then, what did she say?’

‘I’d hoped that could wait until we were back at the hotel.’

‘Not a chance, this is murder we’re talking about. Spit it out, woman.’

Joyce filled in Ginger, who then responded by letting out a long whistle.
